SmS#54: Peaks Of The Week pt.14

12 Sep

France, Brooklyn, Texas and Yeovil. SmS has been trotting the globe to bring you this weeks highlights and it was worth the jet-lag!

French electro-shoegazers M83 return with this awesome album opener, taken from the bands forthcoming release Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. The main man Anthony Gonzalez labelled the new LP “very epic” and judging by Intro, he’s dead right. The track is in no way hindered by the fact that it features the powerful vocal brilliance of Zola Jesus. I saw her at Kvarteret last year and for a very small woman, she has a huge voice. The new M83 LP is out on the 18th of October. Get excited!

Brooklyn’s Lana Del Rey  is the newcomer of the year if you ask me, without a doubt. I posted her first video a couple of POTW’s ago and now she’s back with the other half of the double A-side to Video Games. Blue Jeans is just as striking, and it is possibly even more exhilarating than her previous effort. Cinematic, 50’s noir balladry or whatever it’s labelled, she’s got me hooked. You can buy Video Games / Blue Jeans double A-side from the 16th of October.

Welcome back boys! The Strange Boys were the soundtrack to last summer, perfect music for the summer months (or two weeks here in rainy Bergen!). Now the Austin, Texas garage-rockers are back with single You And Me taken from the band’s up-and-coming third LP Live Music.

And finally, a quick congrats for PJ Harvey. The only artist to win the Mercury Music Prize two times as she walked away with the honour last week. I must admit I was routing for the atmospheric folk brilliance of Diamond Mine by King Creosote & John Hopkins to win, but Polly Jean was a worthy winner! Here is one of the many highlights from her award-winning Let England Shake.
