SmS#46: Peaks Of The Week Pt.11

14 Aug

I’ve actually spent the majority of this last week in a child like state of jealousy at the lucky people who have been at the Øya festival in Oslo. I heard the festival was excellent and hope those of you who did attend had a great time. Maybe next year!  Either way I still had a little bit of time to hear some brilliant new music. So here you go, the tunes that have been making me tick over the last 7 days.

Brooklyn’s Lana Del Rey was brought to my attention last week and now I’m hooked (and slightly in love!). She’s been described as a gangsta Nancy Sinatra, if you can picture that! I just think this singer-songwriter is going to be huge. This song has captivated me like no other in recent months. It’s widescreen, haunting, dark and beautiful and it’s available on the 9th of October.
I hear you like the bad girls honey, Is that true?”

Lana Del Rey – Video Games

This is the new video from one of SmS’s favourite bands The War On Drugs. Using an almost classic rock template, washing it over with synths and backing it up with a hypnotic drum-beat build up, this is TWOD at their very best. Come to The City is one of the many highlights take from the superb new LP Slave Ambient, out on the 22nd of August. Amazing!

Dum-Dum Girls are back and have taken a sonic step forward on Coming Down, the first release from new album Only In Dreams. It’s an all together bigger sound (reminds a little bit of Jesus And Mary Chain’s Just Like Honey somehow), beautifully drenched in reverb and Dee-Dee’s vocals are reminiscent of Chrissie Hyndewhich I think is a very good thing! The sound of this song feels like a natural progression from their fantastic 2010 debut I Will Be, so let’s hope the rest of the new album is this good! Only In Dreams is set for release on the 27th of September.

Let’s finish things off with two relatively unknown hip-hop artists. One of them is called Kanye Westand his mate is known as Jay-Z. Their new single Otis is taken from their collaboration LP Watch The Throne (out now). This Otis Redding sampling track was a bit too straight forward for me the first time I heard it, but After 2 or 3 more listens it’s actually the simplicity of the tune that has made me really dig it.  Check it out for yourself.
