SmS#35: Hove Festival Special

24 Jun

Next week sees the fifth annual Hove Festival kick-off on the 28th of June until the 1st of July. The festival takes place on Tromøya, an island just outside of Arendal on the Norwegian south coast. Not quite in Bergen (7 hour drive anyone?), but the festival is well represented from the rainy west coast.

It all starts on Tuesday (28/6), with Bergen screamers Blood Command starting proceedings on the Main Stage and on the same day John Olav Nilsen & Gjengen headline The Amfi Stage. Ska-Pop favourites Razika take to the Main Stage to warm the crowd up for Aussie Psych-rockers Tame Impala, on what should be a very good opening day. Other acts worth checking out are Oslo’s Deathcrush and the short-sharp Indie pop brilliance from The Vaccines.

Wednesday begins in the best possible way with Bergen’s best new band Young Dreams testing out the PA systems before Leicester heavy weights Kasabian and New York heroes The Strokes! What a day, and if that doesn’t satisfy you then there are also apperances from hip-hop newcomer Freddie Gibbs, Killer Brandon Flowers, Bright Eyes and the brilliant Jamie Woon.

Thursday is more an international affair with the likes of Atlanta rapper Big Boi, Swedish sensation Robyn, English experimentalists These New Puritan, Anna Calvi and Gold Panda gracing the stages.

Then the final day, Friday brings the mind blowing The Mars Volta, contraversial but brilliant hip-hop collective Odd Future, Currensy and lo-fi genius Toro Y Moi to the south coast.

It should be a fantastic four days, the festival itself is held in a near perfect place, the weather is usually pretty good down there and the line-up is top notch! It’s not sold out yet, so you can still buy festival and day-passes. I was there in 2007 and it was a fantastic experience that I’d recommend to anyone. So if you’re going, enjoy yourselves!!

This video gives us a good idea of what to expect from the festival, sound-tracked by Young Dreams:
